AutoShort for YouTube

See what makes a YouTube video or Short stand out against its channel, then make your own original version of the format in AutoShort. The extension shows the outlier score, views per day, title and hook checks and tags on the page you are watching, and its Recreate button opens Chat to Video with your idea, an opening line, a length and a format filled in for you to review.

Chrome Web Store link coming soon. Version 0.1.0.

What it shows

  • Outlier score

Views divided by the channel's subscribers (with a floor of 1,000 so tiny channels do not distort it). A video that gets several times its channel size is worth studying.

  • Views per day

Views divided by days since upload, so a new video and a two-year-old one can be compared.

  • Title and hook checks

Length, power words, numbers, questions, curiosity gap, ALL CAPS, emoji and hashtags, as a checklist. It is not a prediction of views.

  • First two seconds

When you click "Analyze hook", the extension reads the caption line from the page and labels the opening pattern. If the page does not give captions, you can type the first line yourself.

  • Keywords and hashtags

The tags, hashtags, category and caption languages the page already lists for the video, with one-click copy.

  • Badges on search and channel pages

A small ratio on each card, from the views and age printed on the card and, on a channel page, that channel's subscriber count. Search results do not show channel size, so those cards show views per day only.

  • Deep teardown (AI)

Sends the title, numbers and tags (never the video) to AutoShort, which returns the hook pattern, the format, why it likely works and a recipe for your own original version. Free accounts get 20 a day, paid plans 200.

  • Recreate in AutoShort

Opens Chat to Video with your idea, an opening line, a length and a format already filled in. You read it and press Generate yourself; nothing starts automatically.

Install

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store listing for AutoShort for YouTube (link coming soon) and press Add to Chrome.
  2. Open a YouTube video or Short. The AutoShort tab appears at the top right of the page; click it to open the panel.
  3. Sign in at autoshort.org in the same browser to use the deep teardown and Save. The numbers and checks work without an account.
  4. Pin the extension from the puzzle-piece menu if you want its popup (sign-in status, daily allowance, settings) one click away.

Until the listing is live, write to support@autoshort.org and we will send the package with the steps to load it in Chrome developer mode.

Permissions

Single purpose: show research numbers for the YouTube video you are looking at, and open AutoShort with your own version of the idea. It asks for as little as it can:

  • storage: keeps your settings on your device.
  • https://www.youtube.com/*: read the page you are watching and show the panel.
  • https://autoshort.org/*: sign-in status, deep teardown and Save, only when you click.

Privacy policy for the extension

What the extension reads
Only the YouTube page you are looking at: the video title, channel name, subscriber count, views, upload date, length, likes, tags, description, category and caption track list that the page already shows. It runs in your browser.
What it does not do
It does not crawl, does not make a request for each video on a page, does not read your YouTube account, history or recommendations, does not watch you in the background, and does not download or upload any video.
When something leaves your browser
Only when you press Deep teardown, Save, or open the popup. Deep teardown sends the title, channel name, numbers, tags, hashtags, a short description excerpt and (if you used Analyze hook) the opening line and caption timing to autoshort.org. Load channel size on a Short makes one request for that video's own watch page on youtube.com.
AI processing
The teardown text is processed by a language-model provider AutoShort uses for script writing (a small, low-cost Google Gemini model, with a small OpenAI model as the fallback). The request is not stored by AutoShort; only counters are logged.
What AutoShort stores
Nothing, unless you press Save. A saved video keeps the numbers, the title and channel name and the AI teardown you saw, for 30 days, up to 200 per account. You can delete any saved video from the Research page in your dashboard.
What the extension stores on your device
Your settings (badges on or off, panel default, an optional API key you paste) in the browser's local extension storage. They are not synced and not sent anywhere except the key to autoshort.org when you use it.
No tracking, no ads, no remote code
The extension has no analytics, loads no remote code and sells or shares no data.
Contact and deletion
Write to support@autoshort.org to ask what is stored for your account or to have it deleted. The general AutoShort privacy policy also applies.

Limits

  • YouTube changes its page layout without notice. If a number is missing, the panel says so instead of guessing.
  • Subscriber counts are rounded by YouTube (for example 68.9K), and some channels hide them. Shorts pages do not show channel size; you can load it with one click.
  • YouTube often refuses caption downloads to extensions. When that happens, Analyze hook asks you to type the first line.
  • The AI teardown reads text and numbers only. It cannot see the video, so treat its recipe as a starting point to test.
  • Desktop Chrome and other Chromium browsers on youtube.com only. The extension does not touch TikTok, Instagram or Facebook.
